Our housekeeper who came twice a week and has been cleaning for us for twelve
years retired last week. Already our house is a mess as we try to find a
new housekeeper.
Our housekeeper was fantastic and we considered her to be part of the
family. We also must have been quite dirty as a family (that happens with
kids and a houseful of pets) as she went through what seemed like a record
amount of cleaning products each week. At times I thought she was on a
sales commission from J&J.
In risk we also need to go through a lot of cleaning products as risk
management is also very messy. In fact it is extremely messy. If your
risk team is not using a lot of cleaning products then perhaps it is time to
worry. It probably means that a lot of the messy stuff is being swept under
the rug. That is something that Alice, our housekeeper, would never have
done.

Sure thing

I often joke, that being a Baptist, I only take a bet when I know it is a
sure thing. The reason of course is that if it is a sure thing, then there
is no uncertainty and thus it cannot be considered to be a gamble.
I mean it of course as a joke (not a very good one, but I am limited in my
joke capabilities) but it of course is not following the spirit of the
restriction against gambling. Of course it is also stupid. We all know
that the only sure thing is that the opposite will happen when someone says
something is a "sure thing".
